Thanksgiving is just around the corner and we’re getting ready to get STUFFED here at Spa Week! There is so much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving: loving families, great jobs, and so much delicious food.

Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays, but it can be really hard to stay healthy during this time of year. Who can resist a second (or, let’s be honest, a third) serving of mashed potatoes? Or another slice of pumpkin pie? We get it- the holidays are all about indulgence and it can be really hard to say no. That’s why we’ve rounded up our top 5 tips to make your Thanksgiving just a little bit healthier.

  1. Skip the cocktails.

Cocktails can be a delicious part of any Thanksgiving feast, but we don’t think they’re essential. You’re loading up your plate with tons of food, and you’re going to be sleepy after your meal anyway, so why add empty calories with a cocktail? Stick to the basics and if you need something to get through a family meal, opt for a glass of wine.

2. Stick to light appetizers.

There are so many staples that you need in a good Thanksgiving meal– potatoes, turkey, stuffing… the list goes on and on. It can be easy to munch on appetizers throughout the day and fill up before the big meal, but try to stick to light & healthy appetizers, like fruits and veggies.

3. Eat breakfast!

It may sound counter-intuitive that we’re telling you to eat more food on Thanksgiving, but breakfast is the most important meal of your day. Eating breakfast will help you to be less ravenous when dinner time rolls around and that means you’ll eat less during the big meal.

4. Go on a walk after your big meal.

We know, we know. Thanksgiving is all about laying around on the couch and watching football and movies all night long. Try to force yourself to go on a walk – even if it’s just a short one – after you finish your dinner. Get moving and burn some calories!

5. Pile on the veggies.

I know that on Thanksgiving, I’m tempted to load up my plate with mashed potatoes and skip the healthier options, like green beans and carrots. But if you want to stay healthy on Thursday, try to take a smaller portion of your favorite treats and load up on the veggies. You’ll be just as full and you’ll get to treat yourself, without going up a size.
